In all cultures, water is synonymous with purity, health, and well-being. In Roman times this concept was embodied in the baths, buildings intended for bathing, but also a place of rest and social gathering. In the Open-Air Museum of the Roman Villa of l’Albir, located in the privileged environment of Playa de l’Albir, you can learn first-hand about the ritual of bathing in thermal baths built more than fifteen hundred years ago. Through the recreation of the thermal spaces and a didactic and accessible explanation, we offer you the chance to enjoy an experience that you cannot miss. Bene lava! Nice bathroom! The entrance to the Open-Air Museum of the Villa Romana de l’Albir is located on the Bulevard dels Músics.
The visit begins at the thermal baths and can be done without the need for a guide, as panels have been installed along the route with information in Spanish, Valencian, and English. The texts are accompanied by images, plans and photographs that help to understand the archaeological remains. The visit continues at the mausoleum, a funerary building that contained the burials of an important family, the owners of the villa. It is located on Ruperto Chapí Street, close to the hot springs.
The entire route is accessible, both for people with reduced mobility and with baby strollers. In Roman times, bathing was an important event during the day that was usually taken in the afternoon, before dinner. More than a luxury, it was considered a necessity since, after a hard day’s work, the bathroom provided a rewarding physical and mental rest.
